New Discoveries

Unveiling the Vital Link Between Religion, Health, and Community: Why I’m Spiritual *and* Religious

I recently read this article about the many, often scientifically proven benefits of church attendance, and it got me thinking about why religion and spirituality are often missing from conversations about health and well-being.

Despite a long list of social determinants like employment, income, and race being recognized for their impact on health outcomes, religion and spirituality seldom make the cut. But let me tell you, that’s a big mistake.

Research suggests weekly service attendance is associated with better health. For example, a major 2022 systematic review in the Journal of the American Medical Association documented over 215 studies (including Harvard’s Nurses’ Health Study), linking religion to improved health outcomes, such as:

Lower mortality risk
Reduced depression
Improved cardiovascular disease survival
Greater happiness and purpose in life

Now, some may argue that religion is just a correlate, not a cause, for these improvements. However, available data suggests otherwise. Most studies have carefully controlled for various factors — and still consistently show that religious attendance plays a causal role in steering people’s health in the right direction.

Here’s the kicker: despite the growing evidence, religion is still largely ignored in public health discussions, though studies suggest religion and spirituality play a vital role in health and well-being. 

Americans might recognize the societal good religious institutions can do, but fewer and fewer are actively engaging with them. The decline isn’t just about wavering beliefs but practical factors like distance or busy schedules. 

I firmly believe that attending church — beyond simply being spiritual — is a significant factor in how religion enhances health.

Take this quote from Art of Manliness, for example: “Spirituality may in fact thrive most when given a little structure — a prism for focusing one’s feelings, intentions, and thoughts in a more consistent and fruitful direction…” 

Even among the religiously affiliated, regular attendance is slipping — yet, believer or non-believer, there are compelling reasons for you to attend church.

Benefits of being a regular church attendee include enhanced social support, a chance for reflection, disciplined routines, communal singing, exposure to diverse perspectives, lessened partisanship, opportunities for service, and better mental and physical health

It’s time for a change. The world needs more funding for research, incorporation of religious health findings into public health curricula, and a shift in mindset to promote religion as a social determinant of health.
